Grounding: Calm Anxiety in Real Time

September 20, 2025 2 min read

For some people, anxiety can feel debilitating—like a heavy weight pressing on the chest. For others, it’s the undercurrent of racing thoughts and swirling emotions cascading just below the surface. Either way, the impact is real.

The good news? You can use simple techniques to reframe your thoughts, regain control of the moment, and calm your nervous system. One of the most powerful tools in your mental health toolbox is grounding.

Therapists, psychiatrists, and wellness leaders alike use grounding to help people recenter and reevaluate when anxiety feels overwhelming. And the best part? You don’t need fancy equipment—just a little awareness and a willingness to pause.

The 3-3-3 Rule: Simple, Practical, Effective The 3-3-3 Rule is one of the easiest grounding techniques to practice anywhere, anytime: Name 3 things you can see. If you’re indoors, start with your own body—your hands, your clothes, your shoes. If you’re outside, pick objects nearby like a tree, a parked car, or a cloud.

Identify 3 things you can hear. Take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Now listen.

Is it birds chirping? A car horn? The hum of your fridge?

Pay attention to the peaks and valleys of each sound. Notice 3 things you can touch. Wiggle your toes in your shoes.

Feel the fabric of your shirt on your skin. Press your palms against your legs. These small sensations bring your awareness back into your body.

Everyday Examples Stressed before a big presentation? Step into the restroom and run through the 3-3-3. Feeling anxious at a crowded event?

Focus on the sounds of conversation, the texture of your glass, the colors in the room. Overwhelmed at work? Place your hand on your desk, name the objects in front of you, and take three steady breaths.

Pair this exercise with calming mantras like: “I am safe in this moment.” “This feeling will pass.” “I am grounded, I am present, I am enough.”

These small shifts can lower stress, break cycles of overthinking, and bring clarity in high-pressure moments. ✨ Your Turn: Try the 3-3-3 Rule the next time anxiety creeps in.
